What is a PMDC Number and Why Does It Matter?

A PMDC number is the unique registration number that PM&DC (Pakistan Medical and Dental Council) assigns to every doctor after they complete the registration process. Furthermore, this number serves as your permanent medical licence in Pakistan — it stays with you for your entire career and never changes.

In practice, your PMDC number works as your professional identity. Hospitals use it to verify your credentials before hiring. Patients can use it to confirm they are seeing a legitimate, registered doctor. Additionally, international licensing bodies — such as ECFMG for USMLE — ask for it when you apply for exams abroad.

Why Checking Your PMDC Number Matters

There are several important reasons to check your PMDC number online. First, you may want to confirm that your registration has been processed after passing the NRE. Second, you may need to share your number with an employer or hospital. Third, you may want to verify that your details appear correctly in the public database — because errors in the database can cause delays when applying for jobs or international exams.

Moreover, checking your number costs nothing and takes less than two minutes. Consequently, there is no reason to wait until you specifically need it. Check it as soon as you complete your registration process.

📌 Important: Your PMDC Number is Public Information
The PM&DC practitioner database is publicly accessible. Therefore, anyone — a patient, an employer, a hospital, or a licensing board — can look up your details using your name or CNIC. This is by design. As a result, it is important that your name, speciality, and registration status are all correct in the system.

Who Needs to Check PMDC Number Online — and Why

Several different groups of people regularly need to check the PMDC online database. However, the process is the same for all of them. Understanding your specific reason helps you know exactly what to search for.

👨‍⚕️
Newly Registered Doctors
You have passed both NRE steps and completed registration. Now you want to confirm your PMDC number has been issued and your name appears correctly in the public database.
🏥
Hospital HR Departments
Hospitals verify every doctor’s PMDC registration before offering employment. This search confirms the doctor is legitimately registered and their licence is active — not expired or suspended.
🌍
International Exam Applicants
USMLE, PLAB, HAAD, AMC, and Saudi licensing boards all require proof of home country registration. Checking your PMDC number confirms it is active before you submit international applications.
🔍
Patients Verifying a Doctor
Any patient can check whether their doctor is legitimately registered with PMDC. This is a public service — you have the right to verify your doctor’s credentials before seeking treatment.

A Note for Foreign MBBS Graduates Specifically

If you are a foreign MBBS graduate who has recently passed both NRE Step-1 and Step-2, checking your PMDC number is one of the first things you should do after receiving your registration confirmation. Additionally, you should verify that your details match your CNIC and degree exactly — because any mismatch will need to be corrected before you can use your registration for employment or international exams.

How to Check Your PMDC Number Online — 5 Steps

The PMDC online verification process is straightforward. However, knowing exactly where to click saves you time — especially if you have never used the portal before. Follow these steps in order.

1
Go to the Official PM&DC Website
Open your browser and go to the official PM&DC website. Always use the official government domain directly — do not use third-party sites that claim to offer PMDC verification. Moreover, avoid clicking links from WhatsApp or social media that claim to lead to PMDC, as these are often outdated or misleading.
2
Find the “Practitioner Search” or “Doctor Search” Section
On the main navigation menu, look for a section labelled “Practitioner Search,” “Doctor Search,” or “Verify Doctor.” The exact label changes occasionally when the portal is updated. Nevertheless, it is always visible on the homepage — typically in the main menu or as a quick-access button on the front page.
3
Choose Your Search Method
The portal offers two ways to search. First, you can search by CNIC number — this is the fastest and most accurate method because your CNIC is unique. Alternatively, you can search by name — however, this may return multiple results if your name is common. Therefore, always use CNIC when checking your own registration.
4
Enter Your Details and Run the Search
Type your CNIC number — or your full name as it appears on your degree — into the search field. Then click Search or press Enter. Enter your CNIC without dashes if the field asks for a plain number. Furthermore, make sure there are no extra spaces before or after your entry, as these can cause the search to return no results even when your record exists.
5
Review Your Registration Details
Your record will appear showing your full name, PMDC registration number, registration date, speciality, and current status (Active, Expired, or Suspended). Check every detail carefully. Specifically, verify that your name spelling matches your CNIC and that your registration status shows as Active. If anything is incorrect, contact PMDC directly to request an amendment.
✅ What a Correct Record Looks Like
A complete and correct PMDC record shows: Full name matching your CNIC exactly · A unique registration number · Registration date · Status: Active · Speciality listed (MBBS for general registration) · No expiry flag.

If all of these appear correctly, your registration is complete and valid. You can now share this number with employers, licensing bodies, or patients with confidence.

How to Search PMDC by Doctor Name

Searching by name is useful when you do not have the doctor’s CNIC — for example, when a patient wants to verify their doctor’s credentials, or when a hospital is checking a job applicant. However, name searches require more care because Pakistani names often have multiple spellings and common names return many results.

Tips for Searching by Name Accurately

First, try the name exactly as it appears on the doctor’s degree certificate or visiting card. If no result appears, try common spelling variations — for example, “Muhammad” versus “Mohammad” versus “Mohammed.” Additionally, try searching with just the last name if the full name search returns nothing.

Furthermore, if you are a doctor searching for your own record and it does not appear, do not assume you are not registered. Instead, try your CNIC search first — this is far more reliable than name matching and avoids the spelling variation problem entirely.

What Patients Should Know When Verifying a Doctor

As a patient, you have every right to verify your doctor’s registration before seeking treatment. Moreover, a legitimate doctor will never object to this check — in fact, a registered doctor’s details are publicly available precisely so that patients can verify them. If a doctor’s name does not appear in the PMDC database after multiple search attempts, report this concern to PMDC directly.

⚠️ Common Name Search Errors

❌ Searching “Dr. Ahmed” — the “Dr.” prefix may not be in the database field
❌ Using a nickname instead of the legal name on the degree
❌ Spelling variations — try 2-3 common spellings before concluding no record exists
✅ Always use CNIC search for your own record — it is faster and never affected by spelling

PMDC Number Not Showing Online — What to Do

If your search returns no results, do not panic immediately. There are several common reasons why a registration might not show up — and most of them are easily resolved. Work through the following possibilities before contacting PMDC.

Possible Reason What to Do
Registration is still being processed Wait 2–4 weeks after submitting final documents. Processing takes time. Check again after this period before escalating.
Name mismatch in the system Try searching with spelling variations. Also try CNIC search instead of name search — if your record exists but has a name error, CNIC will still find it.
Registration submitted but not yet finalised Log into your PMDC portal account and check your application status. If it shows “pending,” the record will not yet appear in the public database.
NRE Step-2 not yet passed Full PMDC registration — including a public number — is only issued after passing both NRE Step-1 and Step-2. Consequently, you will not appear in the public database until both steps are complete.
Portal technical issue Try again at a different time. The PMDC portal occasionally has downtime, especially during peak hours. Furthermore, try a different browser if the issue persists.
Registration expired or suspended If your registration was issued previously but has since expired, it may show a different status or not appear. Contact PMDC directly to clarify your registration status and initiate renewal if needed.

When to Contact PMDC Directly

If none of the above resolves your issue, contact PMDC directly through the official helpline or email listed on the portal. When you contact them, provide your full name as it appears on your degree, your CNIC number, your application tracking number, and the date you submitted your final registration documents. As a result, their team can locate your record and advise you on the next step.

Additionally, if there is an error in your displayed details — wrong name spelling, wrong registration date, wrong speciality — raise a correction request with PMDC in writing. Keep a copy of your original documents to support your correction request.

🚨 Foreign MBBS Graduates — One Common Reason Your Number is Missing
The most common reason a foreign MBBS graduate does not appear in the PMDC database is that they have only passed NRE Step-1 — not Step-2. Full PMDC registration, and therefore a public registration number, is only issued after passing both steps. Therefore, if you have passed Step-1 but not yet Step-2, your name will not appear in the practitioner database yet. This is normal — not a problem.

PMDC Verification for International Licensing Exams

One of the most important uses of your PMDC number is for international exam applications. Many Pakistani doctors — particularly those who completed MBBS abroad — plan to sit USMLE, PLAB, HAAD, or AMC after obtaining PMDC registration. However, each of these boards requires you to prove your home country medical licence is valid and active.

What Each International Board Requires

For USMLE, ECFMG typically requires a verification letter directly from PMDC — not just your number. Therefore, you must request an official PMDC verification letter through the portal or by post. For PLAB, the GMC asks for similar proof of licensure. Additionally, HAAD and Saudi DHA require your PMDC number and sometimes a good standing certificate — a document confirming your registration is active and has no disciplinary action against it.

Furthermore, it is important to verify that your PMDC registration is in “Active” status — not expired — before applying for any international exam. An expired PMDC registration will cause your international application to be rejected, which consequently delays your entire plan by months.

💡 Good Standing Certificate — What It Is and When You Need It
A PMDC Good Standing Certificate is an official document that confirms your registration is active, valid, and free of any disciplinary action. Several international boards — particularly HAAD, Saudi DHA, and some Canadian medical bodies — specifically require this document rather than just your registration number. Apply for it through the PMDC portal as a separate document request. Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks.
